Dr Viola Peter is deputy director for the Brussels based office of Technopolis Group. She joined as senior consultant in October 2005. Viola has a background in the field of innovation studies including science and technology policy analysis, indicators, evaluation, knowledge-based technologies and innovation systems.

At Technopolis Group, Viola has managed large research consortia, in particular monitoring networks such ERAWATCH and METRIS and currently Monitoring Responsible Research and Innovation (MoRRI). Viola is the lead bibliometric expert at Technopolis Group and develops tailored approaches for various types of bibliometric assignments. She was, and indeed remains, involved in a number of studies based on data and indicators such as the Public Sector Innovation Scoreboard for DG-GROW, ERA progress monitoring for DG-RTD or the collection and analysis of private R&D investment and patent data for DG-JRC.

Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Viola worked at the European Commission’s Research Directorate in the area of economic analysis and indicators. She co-authored EC reports such as the ‘Third European report on Science and Technology Indicators’ (EC, 2003), the annual ‘Key Figures’ series, or the ‘Mapping of Excellence in Economics’ report. Prior to that, she was a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (FhG-ISI), Karlsruhe, Germany, where she pursued project work related to evaluations and policy studies in fields like clinical research, analysis of regulatory effects on innovation, or comparative analyses of technology transfer systems.

Viola studied at the University of Trier and Sophia University (Tokyo) and holds a Master of Economics, a Master of Japanese studies, and a Ph.D. in Economics, all from the University of Trier.

She is fluent in German, English and French and manages Japanese and a bit of Dutch.
