Hywel Jones has developed expertise in science writing and communications around EU policy on research, innovation and environment. He has written for magazines and the web, most recently for the European Commission’s Environment for Europeans and Research*EU magazines and for the DG Connect, DG Research, European Patent Office and European Research Council websites.

Currently, Hywel is coordinating the Eco-innovation Action Plan community platform and newsletter. He has recently contributed to the Environmental influencers survey for DG Environment.

Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Hywel has built up 15 years’ experience as a science writer and communications consultant in the EU research, innovation and environment policy spheres. During this time, he has written and coordinated magazines and websites for a wide range of technology-related clients, including FP7 research projects, the EPO and ERC, the European Standards Committee (CEN), European Commission and COST.

Previously, Hywel was editor of the Elsevier Business Information magazine Telecom Product News, based in Brussels, after having worked several years as a patent examiner for the European Patent Office at The Hague in The Netherlands.

Hywel obtained his BSc in Electronic Engineering from the University of Essex, in the United Kingdom. He obtained a Masters degree from the Ecole supérieure d’ingénieurs en électronique et électrotechnique (ESIEE), Paris, France, and the Technische Universität Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany. He is fluent in English and French and has some knowledge of German and Dutch.
