Erwin Karsten is a consultant at Technopolis Group, based in Amsterdam. He holds master’s degrees in Economics and Finance with a specific focus on the regulation of energy markets. He has a strong background in quantitative analytical approaches using (econometric) models. He is experienced in interviews, cost-benefit analyses, project evaluations, portfolio analysis and in-depth desk research.
His focus area is the green economy and the field of sustainable development. He is also an expert on European innovation policy. His work in the green economy, for example, involved assessing the potential of a financial instrument for financing nature-oriented projects for the EIB. Additionally, his work for DG Clima involved a review of the public consultation for a possible revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and effort sharing regulation (ESR). He has also provided an analysis of the climate finance component of the operational programs of the ERDF. Furthermore, in his work he provided technical assistance on a possible decarbonisation strategy for the Black Sea Trade Development Bank.
In addition to his work for Technopolis, he is a PhD candidate at Radboud University Nijmegen, specializing in challenge-oriented innovation. His research focuses on how the environmental and social performance of firms influences financial performance, In order to generate new insights into what drives the private sector to contribute to sustainable development (such as in the Sustainable Development Goals framework).
