Dr Martin Wain is a Senior Consultant at Technopolis with fifteen years of policy and evaluation experience in economic development and research and innovation. Martin has conducted process and impact evaluations, policy studies and strategic support projects at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Martin is an experienced researcher, trained in various qualitative and quantitative methods such as interviews, focus groups, surveys, network analysis, desk research, literature reviews and case studies. Martin is a regional studies specialist, and his particular interests are business support, knowledge exchange and research collaboration, R&D, intellectual property and standards, and organisations and networks.

Martin’s recent and current work encompasses policy, support and co-ordination for research and innovation, economic development, higher education, and capacity development. He has worked extensively in the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and is experienced with research infrastructures and large research-funding programmes, including the European Framework Programmes.

Prior to joining Technopolis, Martin worked as a Senior Analyst supporting the development of regional innovation strategies for Greater Manchester, northern England. Martin holds a PhD in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy. His thesis focused on sub-national innovation policy and governance networks, and was supervised by Prof. Jakob Edler, Professor of Innovation Policy and Strategy at AMBS Manchester Institute of Innovation Research and Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. Martin also holds an MSc in Local and Regional Economic Development from the University of Dundee. He is a native English speaker, and has a working knowledge of Russian.
