Marius Alt is a Senior Consultant in the Frankfurt office of Technopolis Group. He leads the data science team in the German office and contributes to the Group-wide analytics initatives. His expertise lies in applied data science, particularly in the areas of environmental and climate economics and innovation policy. With a strong analytical background, Marius possesses skills in application development, natural language processing, machine learning, and statistical analysis.
In the recent years, Marius has successfully managed and contributed to various projects at the interface of applied data science and policy-relevant research. His work has involved stakeholders such as the German Federal Ministries, the European Commission, and non-governmental organisations. Notably, he led the quantitative team in the evaluation of the European Bioeconomy Fund, where they built a classifier to identify bioeconomy firms based on their firm description in a large firm database. This analysis supported a web application for interactive market insights and enabled an econometric evaluation of portfolio performance. Additionally, he managed the evaluation of the ERP/EIF fund of funds, analysing its impact on both the supply and demand side of the venture capital market using extensive data sets.
Before joining Technopolis Group, Marius held a position as a policy officer at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Italy, applying quantitative methods such as econometric modelling and machine learning to assess incentive structures for energy efficiency and conservation. Alongside this role, he also worked as a freelance data scientist, supporting start-ups with data-driven solutions and application development. Marius holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Copenhagen and has published multiple academic articles in renown peer-reviewed scientific journals. During his doctoral studies, he also contributed to various policy reports and briefs within the Department for Environmental and Climate Economics at ZEW Mannheim. He also gained international experience as a visiting research fellow at the Rady School of Management at UCSD, establishing international research collaborations.
Marius completed his studies in Environmental Economics at the University of Copenhagen and Economics at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. He has a gained former experience in topics like innovation financing, energy conservation, and sustainable finance. He is fluent in both German and English.
