Marika De Scalzi PhD is a consultant at Technopolis and an experimental psychologist with extensive experience in conducting evaluation projects, and analytical and synthesis research studies. Marika’s expertise in consulting is built on various thematic areas within Public Communication, Higher Education, Health and Research & Innovation. Marika has a strong track-record working on large multi-national projects for the European Commission, having contributed to more than ten projects across the following Directorates-General and agencies: Communications, Justice and Consumers, Education, Youth, Sport & Culture, Regional & Urban Policy, Mobility & Transport and the Executive Agency for SMEs.
Marika has conducted analytical and evaluative work on public communication campaigns, studying how communication can most effectively trigger changes in knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. For DG COMM, she worked on the evaluation of the EC communication activities for the InvestEU Plan, leading qualitative research in seven key EU member states and developing lessons learnt for the EC to use in future campaigns. For DG Justice and Consumers, she worked on the ex-ante evaluation of an awareness-raising campaign aimed at improving small-scale energy efficiency measures that could be applied by individual consumers. This project also included holding a series of focus groups with energy household consumers. Marika was also involved in the ex-post evaluation of this campaign, which, on the basis of the ex-ante results, was set up to target energy poor household consumers.
Marika is currently focussing on the delivery of two longitudinal projects, one at UK and the other at international level, which are aimed at innovating the Higher Educational offer. She is investigating how educational programmes and innovative forms of pedagogy for young adults impact on their career intentions and ability to understand and form their professional identity, and she is looking at how Higher Education Institutions can become more innovative and entrepreneurial in their approaches.
Marika is an expert interviewer of opinion leaders and skilfully leads interview, case-study, and survey programmes. She applies qualitative and quantitative research methods, undertaking rapid evidence assessments, literature reviews, stakeholder mapping and analyses, as well as media and survey analyses. She is also an experienced moderator for consumer focus groups. She has a flair for identifying lessons learnt and developing recommendations.
Prior to Technopolis, Marika worked as a Corporate Communications Manager for YKK, a Japanese multi-national company and taught Clinical Psychology and Research Methods at Sussex University. She holds a MA in Japanese studies, a MSc and a PhD in Experimental Psychology. Marika speaks English, Italian and Japanese.
