Stijn Zegel MSc works as a principal consultant at Technopolis Group in Amsterdam. Stijn focuses on entrepreneurship, industry, innovation, research and the knowledge economy in relation to public policy. He contributes frequently to complex evaluations, strategic studies, large scale implementation projects and other studies. Methodologies that he frequently applies are interviews, surveys, workshops, case studies, (big) data/statistical analyses, data-management, (international) benchmarking and data visualisation. He has been actively working on projects on regional, national and European/international level. Next to his role as principal consultant Stijn takes part in the Management Team of Technopolis Group Amsterdam and acts as the supervisor of a third of the team.

At EU level Stijn recently worked on large complex evaluations for the European Commission like the COSME programme, the SME Instrument and the Enterprise Europe Network. In these evaluation studies Stijn had the lead for the strategic objective ‘Access to markets’ and managed the data gathering and analyses for a large number of national/regional support agencies and SMEs across the EU and beyond. Stijn also lead a project for the development of an ‘Online Learning Platform’ for SMEs regarding international cultural differences on behalf of EASME.

At a national level, he took the lead within Technopolis for the analysis of bottlenecks for the use of the MIT-Knowledge Voucher, the evaluation of the Innovation Credit and the evaluative advisory study regarding the Technology Pact in the Netherlands. Furthermore, he was strongly involved in the evaluations of national co-funding of EFRO projects, the Intellectual Property Rights policy and the Growth Acceleration programme for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. Next to that, he worked on a study regarding the barriers for growth of academic start-ups in the Netherlands for the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Outside the Netherlands, he leads the impact analysis of World-class Ecosystems in Finland.

Also at regional level Stijn is active, examples of projects are: the evaluation of the Economic Programme Brabant (NL), developing the Smart Specialisation Strategy for the East of the Netherlands or developing an indicator and evaluation framework for the Knowledge Axis of Limburg. Stijn also holds a framework contract with the Flemish Agency Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Within the framework contract an analysis of the impact of support for Research, Development and Innovation was developed and Stijn worked on the evaluation of the cluster policy of Flanders.

Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Stijn studied Innovation Sciences at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), during which he studied technological innovations in both the private and public sector from a policy perspective. During his master in the Netherlands and exchange semester in Göteborg, Sweden (2010), Stijn started to focus on the knowledge economy and entrepreneurship.
