Nikos Maroulis is a Partner and Deputy Director at the Brussels office of Technopolis Group. Nikos has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of policy design and evaluation, regional development and analysis of innovation systems. He has expertise in desk research and literature review; design and implementation of interviews; case studies and surveys in addition to foresight and statistical analysis.  

During his career, he has been involved in several projects for the European Commission as well as national and regional governments and agencies in the European Union and third countries (Uzbekistan and Ukraine).   

Currently, Nikos is the Project Manager of the100 Intelligent City Challenge financed by DG GROW, aiming at supporting 100 European and international cities to follow a green smart, sustainable growth path by leveraging advanced technologies. Nikos was also the Framework Contract Manager of the Policy Support Facility (PSF) of Horizon 2020 of DG RTD, which provided guidance to governments of EU and Associated Countries on the transformation of their research and innovation systems.    

Nikos has worked in many evaluations, and costs assessments of regulations commissioned by DG GROW such us the cumulative cost assessment of the chemical industry and the international comparison of the cumulative regulatory cost for the chemical industry.  Nikos has contributed to the development of the national Smart Specialisation Strategy of Greece and the Regional Smart Specialisation Strategies of five Greek regions.  

As project manager of the ERAWATCH Country Reports 2010-2011, ERAWATCH Policy Mix Reports 2009 and ERAWATCH Country Reports 2008; he coordinated the annual production of more than 30 country reports assessing the national research and innovation systems and the public research policies of the EU member states. Furthermore, Nikos contributed to evaluation exercises, including the impact study of the FP6 IST, the impact assessment of the participation of SMEs in FP5 and FP6 and the midterm assessment of the State Aid Framework for R&D&I.   

Nikos obtained his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece and his MSc in Science and Technology Policy from SPRU, University of Sussex, UK.
