Shaping smart Industries at European Cluster Conference 2016

6th December 2016

The fifth edition of the European Cluster Conference was held in Brussels on 1-2 December 2016. Technopolis Group coordinated the organisation of the conference on behalf of the European Commission within the framework of the European Cluster Observatory project.

The conference focussed on the theme “Clusters 4.0: Shaping Smart Industries”. More than 300 national and regional cluster policy-makers and practitioners from industry, research and academia from all over Europe gathered at the event.

Speaking at the conference opening, Irmfried Schwimann, Deputy Director-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs of the European Commission, highlighted the important role that clusters are playing as favourable ecosystems to turn start-ups into scale-ups — mentioning the new Start-up and Scale-up Initiative and Smart Specialisation Platform on Industrial Modernisation — also highlighted by Lambert van Nistelrooij MEP.

Keynote speeches included Professor Slavo Radosevic, of University College of London, talking about the link between clusters and global value chains, Professor Scott Stern, on moving from smart specialisation to smart acceleration of entrepreneurship, and Christian Ketels from the Harvard Business School and European Cluster Observatory, presenting the results of the European Cluster Panorama 2016.
