Dr. Pieter Heringa is a principal consultant at Technopolis Group. He has over ten years of experience in various roles at the interface between science and policy, primarily in the domains of research, innovation and education. He

Pieter was recently involved in several strategic trajectories to strengthen and improve innovation policy. He collaborated in a peer review of Danish research- and innovation policy and he contributed to the start of mission-driven innovation policy in the Netherlands. Currently he conducts several policy evaluations and he develops impact indicators for a worldwide network of innovation agencies (TAFTIE).

Prior to joining Technopolis Group, Pieter worked at the Knowledge and Strategy Department of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in The Netherlands. His responsibilities included the coordination of a programme to improve the quality of policy monitoring and evaluations and the development of the strategic research agenda for the ministry. He also was a member of the Dutch delegation for the Education Policy Committee at the OECD, and member of the programming council for basic research at the funding agency for education research (NRO). Before that, he was a senior policy official at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, where he worked on strategic issues in innovation policy, with a specific focus on the governance of Research and Technology Organisations. He also coordinated the first overall evaluation of Dutch RTOs and represented the Netherlands in the Committee for Science and Technology Policy at the OECD.

Pieter holds an MSc degree (with distinction) in Development Economics from Wageningen University and a PhD from Delft University of Technology, with a thesis on the role of proximity in collaborative knowledge production. He started his career as a researcher at the Rathenau Institute; an independent think tank (part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) that conducts research and organises debates on science, innovation and new technology.
