Technopolis Group

Along with an expert commission led by Prof. Dr Jungbauer-Gans of the German Centre for Higher Education and Science Research, Technopolis Group has successfully completed the second evaluation of the Weizenbaum Institute. Founded in 2017, the Weizenbaum Institute has so far received just under €50m in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Its 180 researchers investigate the societal impact of digital transformation processes.

The evaluation focused on developments between 2019 and 2021 and considered the extent to which the Institute has put in place conditions for a permanent institutionalisation in the future. The evaluation report emphasises the progress made by the Institute, which is characterized by a strong interdisciplinary focus. The Institute has contributed significantly to the international scientific debate, and has engaged in dialogue with politics, the business world, and the wider public.

The expert commission recommends the continued funding of the Institute by the BMBF. It also recommends for the Institute to continue to strategically link excellent fundamental research and societal impact. Besides individual self-determination, the Institute could give more consideration to sustainability as a guiding principle of its research and outreach activities.

In a statement, the Weizenbaum Institute welcomes the systematic and detailed analysis of the evaluation findings and the constructive recommendations, which it intends to swiftly implement.

In this evaluation, Technopolis Group was responsible for the coordination of all content-related and operational work, including the evaluation design, empirical work, reporting and communication with the BMBF and the Weizenbaum Institute. It was supported in this work by the Oxford Internet Institute. The expert commission is responsible for the conclusions and recommendations.
